Above: Several hundred people watch the official flag-raising at the dedication ceremony for the new memorial garden at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1461 in Belvidere, Ill. on Sunday, September 13, 2009. The construction of the memorial garden was conceived and organized by Eagle Scout candidate Josh Broze, a 17-year-old student at Belvidere High School. Broze raised money for the project by selling memorial bricks, and organized dozens of volunteers and local business owners who performed much of the work. The memorial garden features a military tank, a sprinkler system, a flag pole, benches, a paved walkway, and hundreds of decorative plants and flowers. Click here to see a larger image. Lazan's family was imprisoned at several refugee and concentration camps in Holland and Germany during WWII; the members of her immediate survived their imprisonment but her father died of typhus shortly after his liberation. Lazan has told her inspirational story of survival to over one million people at such assemblies in the last 30 years. Her autobiography, "Four Perfect Pebbles", was published in 1996 and the hardback version of the book is currently in its 20th printing. Photos by Curtis Clegg
